What Does It Mean? – Transmogrifier & Void Storage
Recently Blizzard posted up on the Warcraft facebook page an image showing Ethereals in what looks to be Stormwind. These NPCs have some interesting names under them. One is listed as a Transmogrifier, one has Void Storage, another has Arcane Reforger. Now the Arcane Reforger is pretty easy to consider it will be the new reforging NPC, but what about these other NPCs, what does it mean, what does patch 4.3 have in store for us?
Lets look at Void Storage a moment. What could this mean? Well I have 3 theories. The first is Void Storage is a way to increase your bank or bag space, using “the void”. Seems like a plausible scenario, more so on the bank side of things. After 3 expansions, a fourth on the way, who can’t use more bank space, I know I could use a good bit more. I am running out of room storing all these holiday items, tabards and previous tier gear. Another option is a shared storage for all your characters. This would be something along the lines of what Diablo 3 is going to implement where you share storage among all your characters to easily transfer gear. Many people have created bank alt characters, and this would be a possible way to free up that character spot. A Void storage to share amongst all your characters on a particular realm. Now my 3rd option is a stretch on the second option which is a shared storage area that any character can access regardless of what realm they are on. This 3rd option would finally allow people to transfer heirloom items to their alts on other servers.
Next up we have the Transmogrifier. This one is a bit trickier, but the name implies we are transforming something. My guess would be gear. Many games let you transform the look of your gear. DC Universe Online let you use whatever gear model you wanted, maybe this is along those lines. Pallies don’t like your Tier 11 shoulders, but you love your Tier 2, as long as you have your Tier 2 shoulders, boom you can transform your current gear to look like another piece of gear you own. Imagine what this would do for Legendary items, it would greatly extend the life of them, to transform items you own to look like those old out-dated legendary items. Making the look still a status symbol, but your gear would retain the stats of whatever the current item was. I would love to make some ilvl 359 2h look like Sulfuras.
Perhaps though Transmogrifier is just a way to modify the color of the gear. Many times you see the gear posted on sites like MMO Champion early with 5-8 different color schemes, obviously 1 is for normal mode tier gear and another is for heroic, but what about those other colors? Maybe we will finally be able to customize the look of our character’s gear a bit more, and not let everyone look the same. Looking different from your fellow players has always been a heavily sought after wish list item for WoW players, but because of the way items are created in game, it just hasn’t been feasible to change a secondary or main color palette on the items. This might be a new way to customize your characters coming in patch 4.3, or even the next expansion.
What other possibilities could these NPCs have? I am always interested in hearing other peoples’ ideas on speculating for the future of the game, and Blizzard certainly through us some good bait this time.
From Blizzard at Gamerscon 2011
- The Transmogrifier NPC, which will let you change the appearance of any armor piece on you, while retaining the stats of your current gear. (= T12 stats, but with the Tier 2 look!)
- Players won’t be able to change the appearance of their armor into another armor type or class armor set, and you might have to own the armor before you can use it to swap the appearance of your existing armor.
- The Void Storage is a new type of bank where players will be able to store their old armors in order to free up space in their regular bank.
